My Dad died because he needed a new heart in 1991,

My Dad died because he needed a new heart in 1991, his illness was not cancer. However, I understand Melissa's take on friends not fully understanding how to react to her loss. As we gather the lovely e mails about purchasing my new 'Sea swim at Portavoe' print which we will be giving 20% of the sale to @cancerfocusni , this story struck a cord.
It is necessary to keep talking through grief and to not shy away from the big questions. I have learned the importance of this over the past thirty years since Dad died. As a child I was even bullied for "having no Dad", sometimes I pretended I did have a Father so the I wouldn't be different or have to say he was dead.
Children adapt but the more open we are the more we can help others to journey difficult paths. None of us is immune to grief and loss.
The interest for the print has been so big that we launched it on the site. Sharon has taken the names of all who have e mailed and you will get the first of this limited run of print. Thank you 💜

Back in 2012 when @dombarnard helped me build my f

Back in 2012 when @dombarnard helped me build my first website called ‘Scribbles and Pictures’, I was a professional photographer and painter. I no longer work as a photographer even though I adored it!

Dom and I chatted about my reasons for making prints and selling my art online. It was a whole new world at the time!

The main reason I shared with him, which still remains, is because I wanted my art to reach people and to live on the wall as friends, families and visitors sit around a table discussing everyday life.

It’s even more special when the location of the painting or print, its colour palette or the memory conjures up positive associations and familiarities for the parties around that table.

Joel of @thecuriousfarmer shows the A1 ‘beach walks at east strand ‘ behind his kitchen table where there are the two sweet interested parties to the left! Both awaiting discussions about the time they will walk east strand Portrush and skip into the choppy waves.

The frame Joel has chosen for this print is one I favour at the minute- a simple thin wood to house a statement piece like the one above. Thanks for showing how you #StyleYourPrint

I remember during my degree a visiting artist said she was inspired by everything around her and her daily experiences. I thought she was talking crap. Turns out that’s exactly what I do and where my paintings derive from - my everyday.

I have joined @thecoastalmama and a few other folks on their daily dips and obviously it’s great for mental wellbeing, but more importantly we talk about the great work that @cancerfocusni do for patients and their families as they journey cancer. Having watched my cousin Avril suffer at the hands of breast cancer, I am so thankful for the work of charities like this.

Dress for the job you want, not the job you have... mechanic springs to mind!? This is my Dad’s boiler suit ( he was a car mechanic) and even though it’s the most unflattering thing, it is durable, I can wear my normal clothes AND a dressing gown under it on cold days 🤣and it keeps everything clean. It’s covered in paint marks from years of paintings. Do you like to keep sentimental clothing ? Only recently I gave a green Adidas rain Mac to charity that I had worn from I was 17.

The further into my career I venture the more I understand why galleries and shop windows exist. As my Mother used to say when we shopped for my new School uniform “ Lift that off the hanger then try it on so you get a true reading!”.

Naturally, one can’t try on a painting but having been able to see my sister in law ( in our garden) this past week- I let her see the paintings in my home studio. The same thought is communicated - it’s only when you see the paintings in real life that you can appreciate the thick paint gestures, the scale of a piece and the detail when colours overlap. It’s difficult to account for that real life engagement when you are positioned in front of a painting.

Nonetheless, I’m thankful for all things digital at a time when I cannot have customers to my studio. Videos made using the very phone in my hand while I make a voice over about the piece have been amazing for connecting with you.

The last thing I want to mention is that the majority of you seem to be using your laptop or desktop to view the paintings on my website. This is a change as it was predominantly mobile. However, this is a great way to view the original art because your experience of the painting on a larger screen will definitely bring you closer to the real thing... for your “true reading”.
