#TBT 🛎a word of advice to anybody starting their creative career 🛎. This solo show was in 2017. I hung my paintings and held the opening night in a community centre in Hillsborough. Each painting was an Irish seascape of oil on corrugated paper. Eight pieces in total.

It was a simple evening of fizzy water and prosecco ( I’m sure my Mum threw in some crisps for good measure!), I had no press to promote my event. My three kids were 1, 5 and 7 at the time and I would have been happy if 5 people took the time to come and see my work.

It was about so much more than making money. We had 127 people through the door on the opening night and I felt incredibly supported.

Yes, 7 of the 8 paintings sold which is always the icing on the cake but I remember my framer, a few months after the exhibition reminding me that I made that all happen- me, myself and I. I didn’t know how it would work but i did know that I wanted people somewhere, anywhere to see my paintings in real life.

Many times recently as my business expands and I get overwhelmed with how much I am not doing or how far we still have to go- I remember days like this.

Keep making the work you are making, be consistent with your content, use free tools like social media, make yourself accountable and your tribe will come to you.

@owencrane and I talked about the beautiful window that creatives have now because of social media. No longer dragging our portfolios between galleries with our self worth in our boots.

My last workshop of the season is next Friday 21st May. We paint a beach scene and you’re invited. Just one ticket A left where we send you the materials and just 3 ticket B left where you have your own red, blue, yellow, black and white paint, a paintbrush, a pencil , 2 pastels or colouring pencils and 3 pages.

Headspace and healing is part of my workshops- this is not just a dot to dot type lesson from me. I make the experience of mixing paint an important part of your weekend and a special moment in time in your life. See you then!

Leading people in painting- a joy! Yesterday I taught 21 members of a hen party how to paint this beach scene of white rocks Portrush. As with all of my teaching you just need red, blue, yellow, black and white paint, a paintbrush a pencil and paper.

Right now on my YouTube channel you can learn how to paint a beach scene.

Thanks for allowing me to teach you in my own unique style. I talk on my upcoming podcast about how gutted I felt when I didn’t get through to study PGCE ( art teaching cert ). Then I did get through to study a Masters in fine art and continued to build my own teaching style as a community artist. The path works out in the end if we just lean into “failures” and keep believing in the long game goal. My long game is to be painting until I’m a hundred ... if you’re alongside me letting me teach you during that time- then all the better!!
